Precise Frequency Selector Electronic
Crossover
Most manufacturers take the inclusion of an
electronic crossover for granted. A properly tuned
crossover can make or break the tuning of an
audio system. Clarion includes our PFS crossover
on our marine amps.
The concept of the PFS crossover is very simple
- you look up the crossover frequency you want,
then set the dial based on the number of clicks
of the control from one extreme or the other. The
control has 41 different positions. This way, if you
want the crossover set at 80Hz, you can look up
the frequency in the chart (see the mobile audio
amplifier section of this manual) and simply turn
the dial the appropriate number of clicks.
Where this feature really shines is when you
are building a 2-way system. PFS lets you set
the high- and low-pass crossover points at the
same frequency for smooth, accurate frequency
response without the need to run back and forth
from the listening position and the amplifier
installation location.
Thanks to the x10 multiplier switch found on the
rear channels of the APX490M, you can set the
crossover anywhere between 55Hz and 5.5kHz
for the maximum flexibilty.
Flexible Input Signal Sourcing
Clarion marine amplifiers are designed to be
easily integrated into any entertainment system.
With this concept in mind, we include a wide-
range variable gain control to allow level matching
to a variety of different sources, a source selector
switch on the APX490M and speaker level inputs
on both the APX290M and APX490M.
Speaker level inputs allow Clarion marine
amplifiers to be connected to any audio source -
from the most basic of OEM installed source units
to 120V 'home audio' style systems. This allows
you to add additional power to existing speakers,
add additional speakers or even add a subwoofer
without the need for expensive interfaces.
The source select switch on the APX490M allows
you to run a single pair of RCA cables from
a source unit to the amplifier, and have that
signal fed to all four channels of the amp. This
eliminates the need to Y-cables and cleans up
the installation.
Corrosion Resistant Aluminum Chassis
The heat sink of our marine audio amplifiers is
extruded from a large piece of aluminum before
it is machined and finished to our specifications.
This high-mass heatsink features fins down the
side where the output and power supply devices
are mounted to further assist in the radiation of
heat from the amplifier.
Conformally Coated Circuit Board
To further help resist the effects of humidity on
the electronic components inside Clarion marine
amplifiers, we apply a conformal coating to
the circuit board. This silicone-based coating
helps to prevent corrosion around the connection
between the main circuit board and electronic
components.
